Just AI – Data and Algorithms for Communities
The Just AI – Data & Algorithms for Communities initiative at the Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) is dedicated to ensuring that AI and data-driven systems are inclusive, ethical, and transformative for all, particularly marginalized communities such as women, persons with disabilities, youth, and those in rural and peri-urban areas. Our mission is to explore the societal implications of AI across key areas like finance, education, and public services, with a focus on addressing exclusion, bias, and opacity in AI systems and governance.
Adopting a human-centered approach to technology, we work to bridge the digital divide through the empowerment of communities in the last mile, especially through the SoochnaPreneur (“Information Entrepreneur”) Model, which trains digital entrepreneurs to provide digital literacy and access to critical information on e-governance, welfare schemes, health, education, entrepreneurship and livelihood. This model is built around community knowledge, encouraging ownership and leadership within marginalized communities, and promoting meaningful AI adoption that aligns with local needs and values. It is essential that no data is extracted from these communities, and the focus is on building digital autonomy, enabling them to control their own data and digital resources.
Our initiative seeks to create hyperlocal, decentralized models for an inclusive AI ecosystem, shifting the focus from "Smart Cities" to self-sustaining Smart Villages. Through research, capacity-building, and policy advocacy, we ensure that AI technologies are ethical and accountable. Promoting platform accountability and advocating for the responsible use of AI, we aim to empower marginalized communities, ensuring AI serves as a tool for social justice, equity, and self-sustainable, transformative change.

TESTIMONIALS
Connect. Collaborate.
Co-create Ethical AI
“In my village, AI was a mystery. But through DEF’s ‘AI for All’ sessions, I learned how algorithms affect our daily lives—from healthcare to government schemes. Now I help other women understand how to protect their data and question biased systems. AI should work for us, not against us. We need technology that includes us, not excludes us.”

“Misinformation is everywhere—from WhatsApp forwards to fake videos during elections—and it’s tearing our community apart. Now with AI, it’s harder to tell what’s real and what’s fake. Deepfakes and AI-generated content are spreading faster than we can verify them. DEF’s training helped me understand how to spot false information and teach others to question what they see online. We need tools and awareness to fight this digital confusion before it causes more harm.”

“My name is in the government list, but the system says ‘no record found.’ I’ve lost my ration card benefits twice because of a small error in my Aadhaar details. We don’t understand how these digital systems work, but they decide everything—from pensions to healthcare. When your data is wrong, you’re invisible. DEF helped me file corrections, but many in my village are still struggling. We need systems that see us, not erase us.”
