The Just AI – Data & Algorithms for Communities is a flagship initiative of the Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF), dedicated to ensuring that artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven systems are inclusive, ethical, and transformative for all, particularly marginalized communities such as women, persons with disabilities, youth, and those in rural and peri-urban areas. We adopt an AI for Social Good approach to explore the societal implications of AI across critical domains like finance, education, and public services. Through research, capacity-building, and policy advocacy, we tackle issues such as exclusion, bias, and opacity in AI systems.
At the heart of our approach is the SoochnaPreneur (“Information Entrepreneurs”) Model, launched in 2016, which bridges the digital divide in the last mile through the empowerment of local women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups as digital entrepreneurs. SoochnaPreneurs are equipped with the tools and knowledge to provide digital literacy and access to critical information on e-governance, welfare schemes, health, education, livelihood, and financial services. These entrepreneurs facilitate affordable, transparent access to digital resources while nurturing a sense of ownership and leadership within their communities. Through AI literacy, community-driven research, and ethical AI advocacy, DEF ensures that AI becomes a tool for empowerment and inclusion, promoting digital equity and socioeconomic growth in underserved areas.
The intersection of technology and social justice is central to our approach, guided by the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India. We prioritize human-centered design and inclusive participation at every stage of AI development, ensuring marginalized communities are actively involved in decision-making processes, with their needs and values steering AI implementation. Adopting a community-led approach and co-designing solutions with local stakeholders ensures that AI systems address the unique needs of those directly impacted.
The objective of the Just AI initiative is to co-create hyperlocal, decentralized models for an inclusive AI ecosystem, shifting the focus from the traditional “Smart Cities” model to self-sustaining Smart Villages. This approach enables local communities to drive technological solutions tailored to their specific needs, fostering sustainability, autonomy, and resilience at the grassroots level.
As the AI ecosystem continues to expand, holding big tech accountable remains essential. Platform accountability is crucial for building ethical and responsible AI. The actions and policies of large tech companies must align with human rights, social equity, and the public good. At DEF, we advocate for strong frameworks that hold tech companies responsible for the societal impacts of their AI technologies, addressing issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and AI transparency, ensuring that AI benefits everyone, especially marginalized communities.
AI literacy and awareness are key in empowering communities to understand not only the technology itself but also its implications on areas such as land, water, power consumption, and social relations. This knowledge helps communities engage meaningfully with AI systems and advocate for ethical practices. We also emphasize ethical AI development, ensuring AI systems are transparent, accountable, and fair, designed to minimize bias and maximize social good.
Through inclusive governance, we advocate for policies that incorporate citizens’ voices in shaping AI regulations and decisions, ensuring their concerns are addressed. We also emphasize conducting local impact assessments to understand AI’s effects on specific communities, ensuring the technology aligns with their needs and values. Integrating these strategies ensures AI becomes a tool for social justice, empowerment, and meaningful inclusion, driving long-term, self-sustainable and transformative change in underserved regions.
