The Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF), founded in 2002, bridges the digital divide by empowering marginalized communities, especially in rural areas, with critical information. Recognizing that a lack of access leads to exclusion, DEF adopted digital tools and technologies through methodical innovations to create a hyperlocal model. This model is led by local women social entrepreneurs, called SoochnaPreneurs (“Information Entrepreneurs”), who are equipped with digital skills and infrastructure to serve village-level communities. They help people access rights, health, jobs, financial opportunities, and businesses with empathy, care, and peer-consented pricing. With over 2,400 SoochnaPreneurs across 26 states and 250+ districts, DEF has reached over 10,000 villages and served more than 35 million people. By focusing on hyperlocal, community-driven solutions, DEF ensures that digital empowerment is not just a global or national issue but one that responds directly to local needs and realities.
